Last spring I picked up two Cinderella Pumpkin seedlings at one of RIPE’s monthly garden swaps we hold in our local park. I didn’t know anything about the squash except that the pumpkins resembled the pumpkin used to make Cinderella’s magical carriage. I thought they were of the decorative sort.

I planted them in a corner of my community garden plot, made sure they had water, and largely ignored them for a few months. Continue reading →

I recently had to spend five days in Las Vegas. Five days and four nights too many. Despite living just a four hour drive away for most of my life, it was my first time there. I was attending a teacher’s math conference, which was great, but I could barely tolerate my surroundings. To me Vegas (the strip in particular) shows off some of the most despicable traits of our capitalist, sexist society. Its excess invokes strong feelings in me. I won’t go into all the reasons I despise Las Vegas, but I will say for one, it all sits in the middle of a desert, which just adds insult to injury. It is like giving the finger to Earth. Chersonskaya on the vine - Summer 2012

Chersonskaya on the vine – Summer 2012

Chersonskaya squash. There seem to be a fair number of people out there wondering about this variety because the top two search terms that bring people to my blog are “chersonskaya” and “chersonskaya squash.” Or, maybe I am one of the few people on the internet writing about it. Whatever the case, people are itching for some information, so I will provide a bit more.

If one was trapped in a windowless room with a connection to the gardening blogosphere as their only outlet to the world outside, they would know that fall (and spring) is just around the corner. Gardening bloggers around the northern hemisphere are dropping hints that the weather is about to change abruptly: cooler nights, harvesting things just in time, savoring the last of the summer bounty.

Here, in Southern California, I straddle two mind sets. The mother and social parts of me have to prepare for at least another month of very warm temperatures and the possibility of another heat wave. No matter what the calendars say, it is still really summer, even after September 21. The gardener part of me, though, is keenly aware that fall is upon us. Continue reading →

There are few things I find more enjoyable than puttering in the garden in the fresh air of the early morning. Everything is mostly still quiet, save for the birds chirping and the bees buzzing. I go from bed to bed checking to see that things are moving along as they should be.

The winter squash are beginning to set fruit. I am not sure which variety is which. All the vines are tangled together at this point. As they begin to grow, their distinct colors and shapes will reveal who they are.
