I used to start my tomatoes in late January or early February. Then I met someone who told me they started their tomatoes the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Ever since, I have been starting my tomatoes the first week of January for nice, good sized plants to transplant come March. IMG_5768

Those of you who grow several tomato plants every summer will be no stranger to the image below. It is that time of year in the northern hemisphere when the tomatoes keep coming, and coming, and coming. It is what we planned when we sowed all those seeds and said yes to the seedlings our friends didn’t have room for. This year I ended up with 18 plants. I am not sorry.

Tomato Sowing

I start thinking about tomatoes months before I will be able to sink my teeth into their deliciousness. This year my first tomato seeds were sown in the second week of January. This year I planted many, many seeds. Some varieties are brand new to me, others are being given a second chance, while still others are in my “favorite” category. What I hadn’t planned on was the additional tomatoes I would receive from other gardeners – other people’s favorites. Continue reading →

We have been slowly but surely hacking away at the grass. Since the above picture was taken we have cleared the grass clumps up to edge of the lawn that will remain intact. There is about a third to go. Once all the grass is out, we will have to tackle the irrigation system, level everything, lay down landscaping cloth, and then move the raised beds. Still so much to do! I was trying to get all the grass removed before the arrival of our two storm systems, but didn’t make it. So now we will have to wait for the grass to dry a bit again. I am hoping to get my first summer planting done in March, so we have to move quickly. Continue reading →

It is that time of year when the garden just sort of hums along, needing only for me to water and do light weeding. The first round of soup beans have been pulled up and the second round planted. The cucumber vines have just about reached their end. The zucchini slowed down, but is now making a come back. The peppers are coming on strong. And the tomatoes, oh the tomatoes. I am in the middle of a sea of tomatoes. And I am in the kitchen. A lot. Continue reading →

Ah, summer! It has squarely landed here in Southern California and we are finally enjoying the garden vegetables in our daily cooking. We recently got back from a two week vacation on the east coast and the garden really starting hopping while we were away. So much is going on in the garden and I can’t really stay on top of it.

If you are a regular reader you may have noticed I have not been posting as often. I just can’t seem to find the time to write or keep my eyes open when I do have some time. Continue reading →

When I began this blog I shared with my readers that I was going to plant everything from seed in 2012. It would be a first. And, with the exception of three pepper plants, everything in my garden was grown from seed last year. Making the promise to grow everything from seed motivated me to expand my seed buying options, and I turned to seed companies that grow and sell heirlooms.

Pink heirloom potatoes picked up at the farmers' market. Delicious and a great color to get one particular child to try them ;).

Heirlooms are far more interesting than the typical varieties you find in the grocery stores. Grocery store veggies are often grown from hybrids that produce fruit and vegetables that can withstand mechanical harvesting, are stronger for transport, don’t blemish as easily, or are resistant to certain pests. Genetically modified crops are designed to resist particular pesticides or herbicides. These varieties are not bred for a particularly rich flavor or color. They are bred for mass production, transport, and a good shelf life at the grocery store.
